How to Live Green and Feel Better
Wild Ones CNC and the Foothills Group of the Sierra Club are pleased to present a series of programs focused on the interconnection between the health of our planet Earth and its inhabitants.
Throughout 2025, informative lectures and outdoor explorations for all ages will be held at the Mary Alice Warren Community Center and Jack Warren Park.
Our region is rich in diversity of plants and animals. We will share stories about the local forests and the wildlife that live and pass through here. You will see and hear about the beauty of our native plants and flowers, the songs of our birds and the flights of our butterflies. Learn from people who have a deep understanding of our natural resources.
You will also gain an understanding of how preserving the natural world preserves our health and well-being as well. It’s not an either-or choice. It’s mutually beneficial to preserve the environment. Come learn how you can help in your own backyard.
Creek Week in Lewisville on Saturday March 29!
Did you know that what you do in your yard impacts the quality of water in creeks, streams and rivers, even if you don’t live next to a body of water? You can beautify your yard and keep our waters safe through a few small steps. Rain gardens and native plants lead the way! Come learn about the interconnectivity of our local waterways and how you can help preserve them for us and our animal friends.
The program features a stream exploration, a lecture, and a discussion. Free native plants will be available.
The ALL-AGES exploration is led by Jon Hanna, Director of Public Works for the Town of Lewisville, NC.
Our speaker, Kathy Johnson, will talk about the environmental issues that lead to stormwater problems in the home landscape and then talk about specific solutions and techniques that can be applied to residential properties. She will also talk about the role of plants in solving stormwater problems and provide a list of plants to use in situations such as rain gardens.
Kathy Johnson has been a Forsyth County Master Gardener for the last seven years
and was previously an Extension Master Gardener with Transylvania County in Western
North Carolina for twelve years. Kathy is also a retired professional landscape designer,
with certificates in Landscape Design and Woody Plants from George Washington
University. Her design work in Brevard NC frequently involved the implementation of rain gardens, dry streams, and other solutions.
Following Kathy's presentation, John Calhoun, Conservation Chair of the Foothills Group of Sierra Club, will facilitate a discussion about the importance and status of wetlands and water quality in our region.
