Stories about the Native Americans Moses Cleaveland Met When He Arrived
Moses Cleaveland, Connecticut native and founder of the city of Cleveland, was a Yale scholar, lawyer, and served under General George Washington in the Revolutionary War. He arrived to Northeast Ohio on July 22, 1796 where he surveyed the land and negotiated with the Native Americans to ensure their safety. Who were these Native Americans? What was their life like in Northeast Ohio before the settlers began to arrive?
After negotiating, laying out towns and plots, Cleaveland returned to Connecticut and never looked back.
