Join us for a FREE workshop with our friends, Matthew and Tatenda, to learn about the uses of stone mulch for growing crops like sweet potatoes in Alberta! They will share about the design, building and success of Zai Pits at the Land of Dreams and then we'll build new beds for 2024!
With the short growing season, sometimes unexpected cold weather, and limited access to water at the Land of Dreams, long and warm season crops like sweet potatoes face challenges growing in Alberta. In 2023, when Matthew and Tatenda learned about the interest at Land of Dreams in growing plants from different climates, they tested an experiment utilizing Zai pits, stone lines and stone mulch on the compacted site.
We'll talk about:
- the benefits of stone mulch
- heat and warmth absorption in the shoulder seasons
- growing crops traditionally from different climates (like sweet potatoes and peppers)
- alternatives to plastic row-cover
- other ecological benefits for our 4, 6 and 8-legged friends!
- build a new stone pit with stone lines and stone mulch. Will it be in your garden bed?
This event is free to all attendees. We invite you to bring a lunch to eat with other participants at the land leading up to our afternoon workshop.
