About this Event
This three-part course will explore the evolution of different approaches to still life painting from 1830 to 1960. Each student will complete three works, two derived from established approaches under study, and the third will be a contemporary piece of their own.
Week 1: Introductory lecture on still life painting of the 1800’s with examples from Henri Fantin Latour, Cezanne and Sarah Miriam Peale.
Week 2: Introductory lecture on still life painting of the 1900’s using examples by Gwen John, SJ Peploe, Picasso and Matisse.
Week 3: Working up your style as students of this course.
We will be working with local artist Rachel Sutherland SSA in the Conference Rooms at YHA, Berwick, from 10am-12 noon for three consecutive weeks. Participants will complete 3 works, 2 in an established style for research purposes and the third will reflect their own approach. The arrangements of the still lifes will be consistent: vase, flowers, apples/oranges, a bowl and patterned cloth backdrop on a table.
There are eleven places available and the course is suitable for complete beginners as well as more experienced students.
