Many refer to the 1960s as the Golden Age for Soul Music and certainly with such as all the tunes coming out of Tamla Motown, Stax, Atlantic etc., it certainly was.Who can ever doubt how marvellous the likes of Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Supremes and so many more were?
But there were others too - the one hit wonders, the no hit losers. For every Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross, there were hundreds who didn't quite make the grade. They had their dreams, but their reality was different as they faced the fact that there were bills to pay, families to worry about and all that Life threw at them. They ended up back in the factory, the store or wherever and some were reduced to wefare handouts or worse.
Their music was largely forgotten......but not always. More than half a century later, the legacy of these people is still being unearthed. Avid collectors, like Steve Guarnori, many thousands of miles away - are unearthing forgotten gems that need and deserve an appreciative audience.
The Boogaloo Party will reveal some marvellous tunes from this era that need to be listened to and need to be danced to. Join us in the rarefied atmosphere of The Koko Club as we embark on a mission to unearth the work of The Lost Voices of 60's Soul Music. You'll hear a few classics too from the big names....the ones lucky enough to be on the big labels with the budgets to promote them. It's a thin line between success and failure - but at The Boogaloo Party, it's only 'what's in the grooves that counts'!
