About this Event

BOB MOSES

Bob Moses, the Vancouver-bred duo consisting of Tom Howie and Jimmy Vallance, came to life in the Brooklyn underground scene in 2012. Early single releases on taste-making electronic label Scissor & Thread led to signing with Domino and the late 2015 release of their debut album Days Gone By.

Meshing guitar licks, a moody smolder and a dash of dance-floor ambience with lyrical depth and classic songwriting, the duo created a sound that appeals equally to club goers and rock music fans. Translating their sound seamlessly to the live performance realm, years of nonstop global touring - including appearances at every major festival from Glastonbury and Coachella, to Lollapalooza and beyond - cemented the duo’s live reputation and repeated recognition as Resident Advisor’s Best Live Act. A standout performance on The Ellen Show, a pair of nominations at both the Junos and the Grammys (and a Grammy win), and a top 15 US Alternative radio hit with "Tearing Me Up,” have further sealed the band’s burgeoning mainstream success.

2018’s Battle Lines, met with praise upon release, found the duo expanding their sonic palette, embracing their most inventive instincts and infusing their lyrics with a more outward-looking perspective and was named one of Billboard’s “Best Electronic Albums of 2018.”

In 2020 with the world in quarantine, Bob Moses doubled down by releasing Desire, the continuously mixed “concept album for the club” featuring the hit title-track collaboration with ZHU and their own epic concert film Falling into Focus and its accompanying live album. In 2022 they released their third full-length album The Silence in Between powered by the pulsing lead single “Love Brand New” which topped the Alternative radio charts for weeks in both the US and Canada.

NEIL FRANCES

Neil Frances is a Los Angeles-based alternative pop duo making music with soul that you can dance to and believe in.

Sydney-born Jordan Feller and Southern California native Marc Gilfry met in 2012 and formed the group in 2016, having both relocated to LA from London and New York, respectively, in pursuit of new projects. Feller began his music career back home in Australia as a hip-hop obsessed, self-taught electronic music DJ, while Gilfry grew up in a musically-inclined household and played and sang in multiple bands. With Gilfry’s inherent knack for hooks and melodies and Feller’s encyclopedic sonic recall ability and vast knowledge of production, the pair hit it off and began to develop their brand of beat-driven pop ear worms infused with a more organic warmth than most modern electronic dance music. Putting special emphasis on their enthralling live sets—always performed with a multi-piece band and never relying on playback—the group quickly developed a reputation as a must-see stage artist. Soon their reputation as a diverse act with a wide range of talents began to build among listeners of all kinds.

“There’s a lot of diversity in the people who show up to our shows and listen to our songs, and we feel like that’s intentional,” Gilfry says. “Jordan and I always wanted to use our music to build a tent big enough for anyone and everyone.”

“Our music is approachable for a general, dance-inclined audience but also for the technical music fan hanging out in the corner,” Feller adds. “There’s a lot of musicality in what we do.”

Their 2018 debut EP, Took A While, with its blend of psychedelic rhythms, vibe-y, infectious grooves, and a raw, funky spirit put Neil Frances firmly on the map and propelled them to tour slots with established acts like Jungle and Poolside. A number of single releases, remixes, and featured guest spots on their tracks helped implement their fluidity and embracing of a changing modern pop landscape. Steadily building from the ground up since the beginning, the duo has been hard at work on a batch of new music to be released over the course of 2020 and beyond that is sure to expand their reach with its sense of groove and share their sunny outlook grounded in realness.

“An important part of our process is that we always try to write about something with meaning,” Gilfry says. “When you’re writing pop music—which is what we like to call what we’re doing— in order to let a song live in your catalog forever and believe in it and understand what it’s about, you have to come from a real place emotionally and write about something you’ve actually lived through. For someone to listen to your stuff and say, ‘Yeah, I felt that,’ that’s the ultimate goal.”

“To take a page from David Byrne, we try to focus on how the combination of groove and a structure in which no one part dominates the song can generate a unique sensation,” Feller says. “The groove is always there but the groove never takes over completely. Instead, it creates a playground for vocal melodies and musicality. The groove is essential and fun for us, and it’s a goal of ours to physically move the audience as much as possible.”
