Speaker: Fr. Jordan Willard
Topic: "On Earth as It Is in Heaven: The Church's Teaching on Integral Ecology"
Within his treatise on Divine Love, St. Francis de Sales, in Thomistic likeness, ascribes that “beauty” is beheld in the universe as an intrinsic bond of all diverse things in harmonious unity. (Bk I, Ch I). Thereby mirroring God’s inner Trinitarian life, the beauty of all creation resonates in constant relationship within itself, vulnerably and co-dependently. Since the recent publication of Pope Francis’s encyclical letter, Laudato Si, in May, 2015, our catechesis has grown progressively dependent upon this wisdom, that all things are connected and “work together for the good.” (Rom 8:28). It reminds us that the wellbeing of Mankind and that of all God’s handiwork are of mutual and inseparable concern; that to safeguard one depends inescapably on care for the other. As Pope Benedict XVI put it: The way humanity treats the environment influences the way it treats itself, and vice versa. . . . The book of nature is one and indivisible: it takes in not only the environment but also life, sexuality, marriage, the family, social relations: in a word, integral human development. Our duties towards the environment are linked to our duties towards the human person, considered in himself and in relation to others. (Caritas in Veritate, ¶¶ 15, 51). Join Fr. Willard in discussing this perspective of the Church’s social doctrine as well as the personal and cultural challenges beset against it. If we, the missionaries of Christ’s flock, are to contribute some affect and defend the integrity of the Gospel in our time, the theology of Integral Ecology is key.
