Much of Maine reads like a Stephen King novel: the dense dark woods and backcountry ponds, the century-old houses, acres of farmland miles from a highway, serpetine country roads dotted with farmstands, and picturesque main streets lined with battered pickups. Places which especially during the dark and rainy days of October, can get downright spooky...In her new book, Stephen King's Maine: A History & Guide, author Sharon Kitchens identifies the locations that serve as the basis for King’s fictional towns of Castle Rock, Jerusalem’s Lot, Derry, and Haven. Drawing on historical materials and conversations with locals and people who know King, the author sheds light on daily life in places that would become the settings for Carrie, Salem’s Lot, The Dead Zone, Cujo, IT, and 11/22/63. About the presenters: Sharon Kitchens lives in Maine. Every week she can be seen carrying an armload of library books. Michelle Souliere is the author and editor of the Strange Maine blog, winner of the Portland Phoenix's "Best Blog" award in 2008 and 2009, and the Strange Maine Gazette, its print offshoot. She is the founder of the Green Hand Bookshop in Portland, Maine. Michelle spends much of her so-called free time doing research for Strange Maine, and collecting stories from friends and strangers that feed this pursuit. She enjoys creating artwork for local display and publication, including drawings, paintings, and ridiculous amounts of photography. She likes Maine very much.
