WOMEN JAZZ VIRTUOSI SALUTE BLACK WOMEN JAZZ ARTISTS OF EARLIER TIME: A JAZZ CONCERT FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH

On Feb. 3, 2024 Charlottesville Jazz singer Stephanie Nakasian and Richmond pianist Lucy Kilkpatrick with bass and drums will perform a tribute to black blues and jazz singers of the 1920’s, Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey, and women singers through the big bands era and even a little “Bop.” The performance will take place at Second Stage Amherst 194 Second Street, Amherst, VA 24521 at 7:30 pm.

STEPHANIE NAKASIAN is recognized by The Encyclopedia of Jazz as one of the world's great singers. She engages the listener in a spontaneous and fun adventure. A prolific recording artist with 13 celebrated solo albums and appearances on many others, this “Renaissance Woman of Jazz” has toured the world performing at major jazz festivals, cruises and venues such as the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Blues Alley, Birdland Theater and North Sea Jazz Festival, to name a few. A featured artist, Stephanie has sung with notable artists Hod O'Brien, Veronica Swift, Phil Woods, Urban Green, Pat Metheny, Bobby McFerrin, Annie Ross and many others, to include two years touring with the Jon Hendricks Group. She's been featured on Public Radio to include, the "Riverwalk" series and "Fresh Air" with Terry Gross on NPR. Reviewers for the New York Times, Washington Post, and Richmond Times agree: “Stephanie is the real thing. Audiences love her.”

Keyboardist Lucy Kilpatrick hails from Richmond, where she has recently released an instrumental CD, "InnerMission," filled with soul, R&B, hints of jazz, rock and gospel. Lucy was born in Washington, DC and grew up in Reston, then attended Shenandoah College and Conservatory of Music, and toured overseas. Now settled in Richmond, she plays with several bands and teaches kindergarten.
