The Step Up for Veterans event was created as a fitness-centered fundraiser, dedicated to commemorating a veteran who tragically took his own life to the formidable struggles posed by PTSD. This initiative seeks to generate funds for Vetsgiving, a local charity, that extends its support to veterans and their families, not only during Thanksgiving but throughout the entire year.
VetsGiving had humble beginnings three years ago, starting with aid to a single veteran. This individual, who had no nearby family, had been deprived of a Thanksgiving meal for years and had lost the desire to celebrate. Through our conversation, it became evident that numerous veterans face similar circumstances, longing for the warmth and cheer of the holidays. Our mission is more than just providing a traditional Thanksgiving meal; we aim to enhance mental health awareness. Although holidays are typically joyous, they can also be times of deep sorrow for some. Our objective is to bring smiles and happiness to veterans, thereby fulfilling our mission.
Our effort is profoundly inspired by the legacy of Navy Seal Chad Wilkinson, who tragically took his own life following an unseen internal battle. Chad seemed to embody the quintessential Veteran, husband, friend, and son, yet he was wrestling with an invisible foe. In his memory, a CrossFit workout named "Chad" was designed to challenge individuals both physically and mentally, urging them to step out of their comfort zones and reflect inward. In the modern world, mental resilience is indispensable, and it is essential to seek help to navigate its complexities.
Mental health is a pressing issue for many veterans, especially during the holiday season. Our goal is to cultivate a supportive community and spark positive conversations to assist those grappling with this often invisible struggle. By doing so, we hope to provide a beacon of hope and camaraderie to our veterans, honoring their service and sacrifices in a meaningful way.
Every $100 raised feeds a family of four!
