About this Event
It’s rare to see father-and-son musicians play jazz together. When they do, there’s often an almost palpable sense of telepathy on display, as if somehow in the genetic transmission and upbringing, there were some unspoken secrets of the craft that were passed along. If you were in attendance at the last Steinkoler Trio show, you witnessed a memorable night of music, full of creative and sympathetic playing, lots of bobbing heads and big smiles, and perhaps a tear or two of joy expressed onstage. Jeremy and Evan both described it as one of their favorite nights ever playing music.
In anticipation of Evan’s going off to college to study jazz just a week after this show, the Steinkoler Trio returns to The Back Room for an encore performance, with new compositions by father and son, as well as musical contributions by extraordinary bassist Daniel Fabricant.
Evan Steinkoler is an up-and-coming young pianist, vocalist and composer with terrific dynamic range, inventive soloing, and a feel for and command of the instrument beyond his years. He was the winner of the Dick Conte Piano Scholarship Award in 2023, and was singled out for a scholarship to the Stanford Jazz Institute as the top soloist at the 2024 Campana Jazz Festival. He is a graduating member of the Jazz School Studio Band, which this year won the Downbeat Magazine Award for Best High School Large Jazz Ensemble and recently returned from a tour of European jazz festivals; as well as the Advanced High School Combo I (Outstanding Performance in the Downbeat Combo category). His Jazz Ensemble and Quintet at El Cerrito High were the 1st place winners at the 2024 CA Jazz Championships.
Evan is joined by his father Jeremy Steinkoler on drums, an established veteran of the Bay Area jazz and funk scene (Mo’Fone, Erika Oba Trio, JAZZphoria, Jennifer Jolly & Friends, The Bonafides, et al) and Daniel Fabricant on bass, performing original compositions by father and son, and arrangements of selected works.
