About this Event

Join Village Books in welcoming Stefania Helm & Donald Antenen for a clarifying discussion on Homer's The Odyssey!

There are more than 75 translations of Homer's Odyssey into English, with five in the last decade. How ought a reader to choose which translation to read? What makes for a ""good"" translation? How can readers judge a translation if they can't read the original language? Why do translators keep making new translations of an epic poem from the 8th Century BC? Join poet and translator Stefania Heim (WWU) in conversation with Donald Antenen (The Fairhaven Program) for a discussion of the Odyssey and what it means to translate literature and to read literature in translation.

This is the first in a new series of themed conversations co-sponsored by Village Books and The Fairhaven Program.

Donald Antenen lives in Bellingham with his wife, daughters, and thousands of books. He is the founder and lead instructor of the Fairhaven Program, which offers classical, place-based education for teenagers and adults. He graduated summa cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania with a B.A. in classical languages and literature (Greek, Biblical Hebrew, & Latin) and from St. John's College in Annapolis with an M.A. in liberal arts.

Stefania Heim is the translator of two volumes of writings by metaphysical artist Giorgio de Chirico, both published by A Public Space Books: his Italian poems, Geometry of Shadows, and his posthumous novel, Mr. Dudron, for which she earned an NEA translation fellowship and a grant from the ViceVersa Translation Workshop in Villa Garbald Switzerland. Heim is also the author of two award-winning collections of poetry--Hour Book (Ahsahta Press, 2019) and A Table That Goes On for Miles (Switchback Book, 2014)--as well as a scholar of modern and contemporary poetry. A native of Queens, NY, she lives in Bellingham, where she is an associate professor of literature at Western Washington University.
