Collaborative site-based session exploring real-world evaluation and integration of reused steel in construction projects.
About this Event

Steel reuse is no longer a theoretical conversation, but the industry still lacks clear, consistent ways to evaluate, prioritize, and specify reused steel in real projects.

This in-person Steel ReUse Working Group session brings together engineers, owners, fabricators, demolition contractors, and sustainability leaders to co-develop practical evaluation protocols for steel reuse, grounded in real structures and real-world constraints.

Rather than sitting in a boardroom, we’ll be walking an active site, using an existing structure as the lens to ask the questions that actually matter:

  • What types of reused steel do we want?
  • What works best structurally, commercially, and logistically?
  • What information do engineers and owners need — early — to say yes to reuse?
  • How do we embed steel reuse checks into standard building and structural evaluations?

This session is designed to be open, practical, and collaborative — no prior involvement required.

What We’ll Be Working On (Together)

This session will formally establish and advance the Steel ReUse Evaluation Protocols, including:

🔍 Evaluation & Assessment

  • What makes steel reuse-ready?
  • What minimum data is needed to assess suitability?
  • How do we align reuse with existing engineering standards and review processes?

🏗️ Real-World Application

  • Member sizes, types, and conditions that actually move between projects
  • Market realities, risk thresholds, and decision timing

🔁 System Integration

  • How evaluation protocols plug into project workflows
  • How steel reuse can be checked by default, not as a one-off
  • Informing how steel is documented, assessed, and transferred between projects

Who Should Attend

This session is intentionally broad and welcoming. We encourage participation from:

  • Structural Engineers & Existing Building Specialists
  • Owners & Developers
  • Fabricators & Steel Contractors
  • Demolition & Deconstruction Professionals
  • Sustainability, Carbon & Circular Economy Leads
  • Anyone shaping how steel buildings are evaluated, designed, or taken apart
