A $3 cover charge admits you to play or just listen; aspiring musicians and poets, up-and-coming artists and performers preparing for shows are just some of what you will hear.
The environment is respectful and ideal for musicians and artists of all ages.
Open Mic Night is currently BYOM (bring your own microphone), although we will be switching between performers and sanitizing our microphones for you to use is you do not have your own.
Steel City Coffeehouse is a listening room, and while the performers love the audience to applaud, laugh and often sing along, too much conversation during the show distracts other listeners and is disrespectful to the songwriters who form the backbone of our music community.
We encourage talking before the show, between sets and after the show, but ask that during the performances, audience members keep their voices low and talking to a minimum.
We will be reserving tables, please contact [email protected] to reserve your table!
Seating/Capacity is limited, masks must be worn at all times unless seated at your table.

Steel City wants your Thursday Open Mic performance to be amazing, and so we are introducing the Steel City Open Mic Backup Band (SCOMBUB). Made up of two local multi-instrumentalists and singer-songwriters, Pat Rooney and Eli Wenger, SCOMBUB are a quick study, and would love to back up your open mic performance on drums, bass, guitars, percussion and harmony vocals. You bring the song, Steel City will provide the band!
How does it work?
1. Choose which song(s) you want backed up (original songs and covers songs are equally welcome).
2. Email [email protected] and submit either a link to the song you want to play, or upload an mp3 of the song into the email. If you are submitting an original song, please also provide lyrics to the song. NOTE: If you do not provide links or mp3s and lyrics, SCOMBUB will not be able learn your song, no exceptions.
3. In your email, please include any important information that SCOMBUB should know. Which two instruments would you like to accompany your performance? Are you changing the key? Is there a section you want to extend so that you can play a solo? Do you want to add harmonies that aren’t on the recording? Do you want to speed it up or slow it down? SCOMBUB will learn the song exactly as you provided it, along with your listed changes, so please make sure to provide accurate links and information.
4. Email Submissions are due by midnight, the Sunday prior to the open mic that you are planning to attend.
5. Limit 1 song per performer, per week.
6. There is a 1-strike policy. If you submit a song and do not attend the open mic, that’s 1 strike.
7. Don’t mess with SCOMBUB. I mean, c’mon, have you met Ed? He’s a sweetheart of a guy but seriously; he could literally twist you into a friggin pretzel!
8. Have Fun! SCOMBUB loves to play music, and they will help you to create the most incredible Open Mic performance possible!

We will be continuing Online Open Mic for the duration of 2021, as we broadcast live from Steel City!
Online performers may get an opportunity to play for the folks inside Steel City, and the performers inside Steel City will perform for the online listeners as well as those in-house.
Join us to hang out and listen.
