About this Event

This month we have two special community art events that look at how light shapes our environment at the Ynot Lot: "We're Here," by artist April Danielle Lewis in partnership with Signal Station North, and "The Baltimore Underline", (pictured below) an upcoming black light mural installation along North Ave from our friends at Made You Look + MICA's Center for Social Design. See below for more info and venue highlights!

As always, stop by the Ynot Lot earlier in the evening at 4 W. North Ave to grab your map and dance to DJ T. Rexx (Theo George) before you make your stops.

COVID Guidelines:

Please follow the city's mandate to wear a mask inside whether you've been vaccinated or not. We are encouraging masks in crowded outdoor spaces as well. Please follow the covid precautions of each specific venue as they adapt to keep our community safe, you may be required to show proof of vaccination so consider bringing that with you.

While each artist is deeply connected by birth or residence to particular southern states – Chicago to Georgia – “The South” is more than a geographical location. Rather it is a repository for memory, hallowed ground for Black people, and a cornerstone for cultural transmission in the West.

Rachel is a scalding view of racism, personal loss, and the high price of truth.

One of the forebears of the Harlem Renaissance, Angelina Weld Grimké wrote “Rachel” in 1916 as a defiant reply to the recent release of DW Griffith’s film “Birth of a Nation”. Originally titled “Blessed are the Barren”, the play centers on a Black woman who rejects marriage and motherhood after learning a horrible family secret. It was first produced in Washington, DC by the NAACP, and published in 1920. Baltimore playwright Aladrian C. Wetzel’s world premiere adaptation is her second commissioned play for Rapid Lemon Productions, after 2019’s acclaimed “Thank You, Dad”.

The show ends September 26th. Read a review here and

Necessary Steps. An artist’s life is rife with failure. In addition to becoming one of the more annoying truisms of an artists career, this fact is also an essential koan to one’s dedication to studio practice and the incorporation of art-making into everyday living regardless of discipline. Gallery CA presents submitted work that was rejected, works that have failed, and works that just didn’t work.
