Join us for a short, informative, and interactive presentation at the Damascus Trail Center, designed specifically for those planning to embark on an Appalachian Trail long-distance hike. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or new to backpacking, this "Start Smart" session will provide valuable tips, essential knowledge, and practical advice to ensure you’re fully prepared for your journey.
Trainings are provided by Slim Jim, our expert ridgerunner, and will cover essential topics, including:
- Trail Logistics: Planning your trip, understanding trail maps, and navigating through terrain
- Packing Essentials: What to bring and what to leave behind for an efficient, lightweight backpack
- Safety & First Aid: Staying safe on the trail, emergency preparedness, and common injuries to watch out for
- Leave No Trace: Sustainable backpacking practices to help preserve the beauty of the Appalachian Trail
- Trail Culture & Community: How to connect with fellow hikers and experience the unique trail culture
This event will also provide a chance to ask questions and get advice from experienced hikers who have completed long stretches of the trail. Whether you’re starting in Damascus or planning to hike other sections, this session will help you feel confident and prepared for your adventure ahead.
15 minute rolling sessions will be hosted from 3-5PM on Friday, March 7th;10AM - 5PM March 8th; and 10AM - 3PM March 9th.
