Join local astronomer Kate Earl for a beginner’s class on astronomy and the night sky. In this two-hour session you'll be shown how to recognise the well-known constellations, hear how they have been utilised by humans since the Stone Age, and learn tips on how to star-hop using the brightest stars. You’ll also spot Saturn, the moon and star clusters through a telescope.
Along the way we’ll chat about the planets in our Solar System, as well as the importance of reducing light pollution for both humans and wildlife, and much more.
The evening will mostly be spent outside, but at various points we will head to the barn to warm up and learn about some of useful tech and apps available that can help you enjoy the night sky when you’re back home.
If the evening is cloudy we will run an indoor stargazing session. Kate will walk us through our Solar System, using models, the latest images of the planets, and a few surprises that can help us better visualise these deep, dark regions of space. We will also see an interactive version of the night sky, and have a short talk on meteorites, with an opportunity to handle some of these magnificent objects that have landed from outer space. All the whilst keeping an eye for a gap in the clouds to do some stargazing!
