Joan Caviness will get us started with a basic Country 2-Step lesson.
Country 2-Step is danced throughout the US with variations in style from region to region. Its popularity stems from its versatility, ease of learning, adaptability to social situations and the fun, high-energy country tunes for which it fits perfectly. It can also be danced at a wide range of tempos and to many other music styles. Because it’s easy to learn, so many people can dance to it that it can be the center of endless social situations. In many places it is the heart of the social dance scene. An advantage of dancing Country 2-Step at StarDusters is the big dance area of more than 2,000 sq ft of column-free floating hardwood floor. There's plenty of room for your Country 2-Step to have multiple turns and wraps on a side.
It's worth noting that there is a whole “industry” around Country Dance competitions in which country dancers can rise to become national, and even international, Country Dance stars. Joan Caviness is such a dancer.
Joan studied music from the age of five and spent many hours choreographing her own dances to all types of music. At the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, Joan began her formal study of dance, taking jazz, modern, and ballroom. She immediately fell in love with partner dancing, joining the Ballroom Formation Team at UNC. Joan has continued to study, teach, judge, and perform dance of all kinds because it is her love language. She is a world-champion line dancer, placed second in the United Country Western Dance Council 2025 Pro-Pro Div II, and has led her own pro-am partners to become world champions in country-western dancing. Joan looks forward to sharing the joy of the 2-Step with you at the next dance!
