There are three inescapable truths that inspired us to add this to the calendar:1) The Black Cats are nerds who love science fiction.
2) Star Trek has been "woke" since the original series debuted on NBC in 1966. (This truth is not negated by reactionary nerds' refusal to see this.)
3) Growing racist, xenophobic sentiments and the political expression of that in ICE's escalating brutality is perhaps the most heated human-rights issue today. So, what does the Star Trek universe have to say about this?
We will be watching "Sanctuary", a 1993 episode from the second season of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Space station DS9 is visited by refugees from a race called the Skrreeans; three million of them have been driven from their homeworld by an alien invasion. The Skrreean leadership soon come to believe that the planet Bajor may be an ideal place for them to resettle on, but the Bajoran government are reluctant to absorb so many refugees at once when they have so many of their own problems. As the Skrreeans await Bajor's answer as visitors aboard DS9, station locals begin to complain of the newcomers' perceived criminality and poor hygiene. The parallels to anti-immigrant rhetoric in this country over the past 30+ years should sound pretty obvious.
Discussion will follow the screening.
