Rhode Island-born sculptor Sophia DiLibero's work looks as if it crawled out of the beaches and trees of a parallel universe just across the galaxy from the coastal area where she was raised. Anthropomorphic and almost scientific artifacts, Sophia's sculptures begin as sketchbook renderings until she draws them in the third dimension.A graduate of Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Sophia emphasizes the value of community in the artistic process. In her time in the community of Generator Makerspace, Sophia has been pondering the Vermont flora and fauna she's observed on hikes and excursions, or seen getting fished out of Lake Champlain. She has also spent time contemplating how and where to merge technologies such as the CNC router with the tradition of working with hand tools. Sophia is inspired by artists such as Philip Guston, Louise Bourgeois, and PJ Cobbs for the form and feeling of their work, and listens to a boat load of Michael Hurley, whose music proclaims great love for Vermont and paints vibrant pictures of its own.
This event will showcase the artist's silk paintings and wood carvings, as well as offer demonstrations and opportunities to try out both processes.
This event is free and open to the public, but please RSVP.
