About this Event

The BMTR Project is proud to present a special staged reading of BLACK TO MY ROOTS: African American Tales from the Head and the Heart by Kathya Alexander and Reneschia Brown, alongside a selection from MWEUSI MPAKA MIZIZI by Muso Simekha, a Swahili translation of the play.

Attendees are invited to join in this extraordinary opportunity to witness powerful storytelling and explore the cultural significance of African American and African heritage through theatre.

BLACK TO MY ROOTS explores the personal, social, and political implications of Black women’s hair. This moving work highlights the complex relationship African American women have with their hair, which touches on issues of self-esteem, social interactions, and career opportunities—ultimately reflecting on broader societal themes.
