About this Event
Join us for the September version of the 2025-2026 Greenville County Historical Society Lecture Series. We have moved our location to Downtown Presbyterian Church on West Washington Street.
From Stagecoaches, Railroads, and Streetcars: Greenville’s Early Transportation History,
featuring Dr. Robert Benedict
Learn how Greenville evolved from early wagon roads to a major rail destination and ultimately a transportation hub. Robert Benedict will present the history of the early stagecoach and mail routes. The lecture will also cover how Benjamin Perry, Waddy Thompson, Vardry McBee, and others successfully extended the Columbia Railroad (ultimately the Columbia and Greenville Railroad) to Greenville instead of Anderson, as John C. Calhoun advocated. It will also discuss how neighborhoods and textile villages were developed as streetcar suburbs before the automobile led to major road development arteries.
Members are free. Guests are $15. To join, go to w. If you are not sure you are a member, email us at [email protected].
