About this Event

This session is for volunteers both familiar with STAA and those who are completely new. Come along to help us regularly, just this once, or to try something out! *

This session is part of our regular Saturday volunteering. This session we will come together as a team to manage our wildlife areas, and learn about the technique and theory while we are doing it.

We will concentrate on looking after our coppice areas - including the heritage technique of cutting the wood of our hazel and willow trees for use next year, and to prolong the life of the tree AND create a unique habitat for insects and other wildlife. This will include sawing the wood, as well as processing and storing it. We will also clear and manage the areas around the coppices to make sure it's as good as can be.

Suitable for all skills and abilities: the session is practical and will focus on improving the habitat of the wildlife areas. You will be given all tools and information you need (though feel free to bring your own gloves if you like).

Meet at Ransom Road entrance for 10am.

Any questions, please email us at [email protected]

* We provide inductions for volunteers to attend to learn all about STAA and our volunteering programme - if you like the session, and hope to return, we will ask you attend an induction within roughly the first 3 sessions.

SESSION DETAILS

Activities include practical gardening and conservation outdoors.

Refreshments: Please bring your own food and drink for the session- there will be a break about lunchtime. We will provide hot drinks from the infamous storm kettle!

Amenities: A compost toilet is available with hand sanitiser for hand washing.

Terrain and weather: There are some hills and uneven surfaces, so please wear suitable shoes and dress for the weather. If it has been raining, some paths may be muddy. We will mostly be working outdoors.

Extra information: Please tell us if you have any additional questions or requirements. We welcome all volunteers 16+ but please do tell us in advance if you are under 18.

Parking, directions, access: Before the event, you'll receive an email with details of how to find the starting point and where to park. The session is within a locked site, so please be on time, as it can be tricky to collect latecomers.
