Here, one of my moon poems to get the fall feeling started:
OCTOBER 2015: FULL BLOOD or SANGUINE MOON/ HARVEST FULL MOON
We seek sun where we recently sought shade.
Alchemy of warm days and cool nights
turns green to gold.
Alizarin-dipped sumac laces the edge of the woods
and Iowa ditches.
Leaves succumb to gravity and trees stand unadorned.
Small animals seek evergreen underbrush for cover.
Rain of acorns—
Small dreams planted now
will become big, sturdy, long-lived ideas.
Crows gather in long-slanted light and talk of their winter plans:
to solve puzzles with sticks, design Rube Goldberg machines
and to carry the sacred laws to mortals.
Meanwhile, robins decide what to pack in their suitcase.
On a warm Sunday evening, I watched the blood moon lunar eclipse,
its fundoscopic sanguineous eye
mottled and vein-y as a fertilized yolk sac.
I stood awed as ancient Homo naledi
would have looked to the sky
unable to take in Heaven’s magnitude and meaning.
Arc by arc the red disc regained her moonly-bright shape
pregnant with promise.
