About this Event
Welcome to St George's Crypt Heritage Open Day 2024!
Come join us at Saint George's Crypt to explore the rich heritage of this iconic location through a full guided tour, learning the history behind this established homeless charity.
Originally set up as temporary accommodation in 1930, St George's Crypt is now an established homeless charity offering hot meals, healthcare and wellbeing treatments, rehabilitation programmes and shelter for the vulnerable people of Leeds. As part of Heritage Open Day 2024, there will be a unique opportunity to see inside the historic Crypt and gain an insight of its origins from our tour guides who live and breathe the Crypt.
Don Robins arrived at St. George’s Church as Vicar in 1930 and quickly noticed the unemployment and poverty surrounding Leeds. Beneath the church was Victorian Crypt which he converted into a soup kitchen and opened publically to anybody. St George's Crypt serves, on average, 50,000 meals, rehouses and provides shelter for 2000 people and gives 1,500 food parcels to families and individuals in need each year.
