About this Event
As part of the Church's Heritage Open Day we are offering tours of the bell tower. Tours last around 45 minutes. We will ascend the tower to the ringing room where you will be able to see the clock and the bells being rung. We will then ascend further to the bell chamber, where you can see the actual bells and watch one being rung. Weather and time permitting, there may also be an opportunity to ascend to the roof of the tower where on a clear day you can get excellent views of St Annes and beyond.
Please arrive at least 5 minutes before your tour is due to start, ready for the safety briefing. If you arrive late and miss the safety briefing you will not be able to ascend the tower.
Unfortunately we have to limit the number of people we can take up the tower for space/safety reasons, so please ensure you book your ticket in advance. (NB - To comply with our insurance, children under 8 are not permitted up the tower.) Each ticket admits one Adult or one Child. Children under 16 MUST be accompanied by a responsible adult. Tickets are free, but we suggest a donation on the day of £5 for every adult in support of the Church and the St Anne's Ringing School.
Accessibility
The ringing room is accessed via a steep, enclosed spiral stone staircase of 38 steps. Some people find this a little claustrophobic. The bell chamber is a further 20 stairs up. Ascending from the bell chamber to the roof is via a set of open and steep wooden stairs. The roof has a number of changes of level and there are trip hazards and guy lines to be aware of. For safety, access will not be permitted to the roof unless it is a dry day with low wind speeds.
Anyone who may struggle to ascend the tower can view the ringing room and bell chamber on the CCTV system from the ground floor - no ticket is required for this.
