Speaker Bios
Dr Jenny Yang is an Obstetrician Gynaecologist with a strong passion for comprehensive and equitable reproductive healthcare. She completed her specialist training at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital before pursuing further training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology Ultrasound. She also completed a Masters in Global Health, completed a Fellowship in Global Women’s Health and Equity with the University of Toronto based in Canada and Kenya, and has worked for Medecins Sans Frontieres in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Jenny currently works as a Staff Specialist at Liverpool Hospital and as a Sonologist at Ultrasound Care. She is passionate about providing quality diagnostic imaging and screening for both marginalised populations with limited access to services, as well as for everyone she meets in all aspects of clinical care which she provides. She is also passionate about improving access and provision of family planning services and is on the NSW and SWSLHD Safe Abortion Care Working Groups. She has published peer-reviewed articles in the areas of global women’s health, family planning, obstetrics and medical education, and is an enthusiastic teacher of medical students, junior doctors and obstetrics and gynaecology trainees at both Liverpool Hospital and in Kenya.
Jenny lives with her husband, daughter, cat and pug and, enjoys seeking out Sydney’s best gelato in her spare time.
Rashmi Pithavadian, BA, MRes, FHEA, PhD candidate, is a health sociologist working as a sessional academic and researcher at Western Sydney University. As part of her research, she has interviewed people who have vaginismus and health professionals to understand how help-seeking for the condition can affect sense of self and health behaviours. Her current PhD work is focused on developing healthcare resources to support women with vaginismus. While her special area of interest is painful sex in women, she also undertakes research, teaches, and publishes chapters and journal articles on sexual and reproductive health and broader public health issues. Her award-nominated teaching and research centres the perspectives of people who are marginalised in healthcare to improve their experiences of health, treatment, and well-being. She is also an experienced qualitative researcher who has provided extensive consultancy to support the qualitative components of health-based projects. These projects have been with Local Health Districts, Colgate, Australian Research Council grants, University of Sydney, and Western Sydney University.
Dr Renuka Shanmugalingam is a Nephrologist and Obstetric Medicine Physician in South-Western and Western Sydney. She maintains an active clinical and research interest in renal obstetrics and has completed a PhD in Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy. Dr Shanmugalingam led the development of SOMANZ's Hypertension in Pregnancy Guidelines 2023 and is also an Executive Council Member of SOMANZ (Society of Obstetric Medicine ANZ). Dr Shanmugalingam has a strong passion for teaching and is currently the Clinical Sub-Dean at Western Sydney University's School of Medicine. She currently chairs SOMANZ's Education Committee and recently lead the organisation of SOMANZ's inaugural virtual Obstetric Medicine Update Course 2023. She also part of ANZSN's Parenthood in Renal Disease working group.
