About this Event
This International Women’s Day, SSG welcomes artist Cindy Rehm of HEXENTEXTE to guide us in a game of Exquisite Corpse at the historic PRS Library!
Exquisite Corpse is a collaborative drawing and writing method developed by the Surrealists in the 1920s that reflects their interest in chance and the use of automatic techniques.
Together, members of the Surrealist group created countless “frankenstein” creatures and texts that move between the absurd and the grotesque. In this open Workshop with HEXENTEXTE, Rehm will present a brief overview of the technique followed by group collaboration to make Exquisite Corpse drawings and texts. The technique engages spontaneous play to create unexpected results as each participant adds to a drawing or text without seeing the preceding contributions, which are hidden by folding the paper.
Participants will be invited to consider the oppressive ways language and image have historically been used against women, and are encouraged to use Surrealist techniques in a collective gesture to move beyond the limits of patriarchal structures.
All Materials will be provided, but if you would like to bring images of your own you're welcomed to. No previous drawing or writing experience necessary.

HEXENTEXTE is a collaborative, feminist project founded by Cindy Rehm in 2021 that focuses on the intersection of image, text, and the body. Their most recent publication, HYENA includes work by over 80 artists and writers in conversation with women’s Surrealism. Their new collective blog Knowing Bodies presents images and texts that address aging, and the menopause transition.Cindy Rehm is a Los Angeles-based artist and educator. She serves as co-facilitator of the Cixous Reading Group and is co-founder of the feminist centered projects Craftswoman House and Feminist Love Letters. Her interdisciplinary practice moves between drawing, performance, and video to address the cultural suppression of women’s narratives and the legacy of hysteria.
