About this Event
Squamish Estuary Walk with Vancouver Queer Birders!
Hello birders!
We are back again for a little fall migration adventure to Squamish Estuary with our pals at @naturetrustbc! Unlike most of our events, this one will be limited capacity, registration for the (as always, free) event will open on Friday September 20th at noon!
Skwelwil'em Squamish Estuary Wildlife Management Area is a thriving ecosystem that supports over 200 wintering and migratory bird species, from Cedar Waxwings to Snow Geese! Join us on the Estuary Trails for a sweet early afternoon jaunt to greet our incoming fall migrants!
As the higher elevation conditions can be a little unpredictable, we recommend wearing rubber boots and preparing for all conditions (rain jackets, boots, extra socks!). We also recommend bringing lunch as we will be out of the city for a few hours! Rumour has it that the trail is also fairly bug-heavy, so bug spray would also be a big plus!
The Nature Trust of British Columbia is a non-profit land conservation organization that has worked to protect & conserve ecologically important land across BC since 1971! This will be our second event working with them since our Boundary Bay walk last fall!
🦆info We will meet on Sunday, October 6th at The Squamish Plaza (37915 Cleveland Ave, Squamish, BC) before heading out to the Trail at 10:30
🦆Accessibility: The estuary trails have minimal elevation gain, however, there are very few places to sit and rest along the trail. The terrain is highly dependent on weather conditions, and rainy conditions may make the terrain muddy and difficult. More trail details will be linked in bio!
🦆This is a social event, and all members are responsible for their behaviours, choices, and understanding of their capabilities. VQB organizers cannot be held responsible for injuries, accidents, or damages that may occur over the duration of our events.
Once we have finished the designated time frame, this marks the end of the formal meetup. From here, the group is welcome to continue wandering and birding as desired in the area! With this, please note that once the designated route is completed, we can no longer guarantee the terrains, elevations, and distances that will be covered!
As always- the group is not a formal lead walk! Both us and Nature Trust will act as leads to answer questions, point out birds, and help with identification- but it's always encouraged to chat with other birders and build connections with one another!
Following the event, you're welcome to tag us in your ebird lists @Vanqueerbirders! As always, binocs are provided through @nocs and Vancouver Neighborhood Foundation 👀
These events are held on the stolen, ancestral territories of the Squamish Nation, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw.
