About this Event
Pelham Bay Park is noted for its dramatic, rocky shoreline, salt marshes and deep woods. Join us on a leisurely walk to look at the wild flora that grow in each habitat. Marielle will share tips and point out botanical features to help with identification. We'll observe bark and leaf characteristics of trees overhead with hand lenses.
We will also note any "spring beauties" along the trails. We're likely to see Wood Anemone (Anemone quinquefolia), Lowbush Blueberry (Vaccinium pallidum), Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida) and various locally rare species such as Alumroot (Heuchera americana) and the hemiparasite Wood Betony (Pedicularis canadensis). We'll take some time to admire the stunning views and non-vascular plants and note the wildlife.
Meet at *northeastern corner* of parking lot to walk Hunter Island. Recommended attire: sturdy shoes, brimmed hat, sunscreen and pants tucked into socks and sprayed with tick repellent. Bring water and snacks. Binoculars are helpful, hand lenses will be provided. Severe weather cancels, light rain does not.
