THIS EVENT IS AT NELSON CATHEDRAL.
Nelson Youth Choir, established in 2020, presents their first concert, Spring into Summer, to capture the renewal and hope that Spring brings, and to explore the bright and passionate
colours of summer.
We know that the joyful and uplifting experience of group singing can help promote mental wellbeing through generating a sense of positive mood, happiness and enjoyment. Since the power of singing also counteracts feelings of stress or anxiety, the choir supports the I AM HOPE youth and community focused support group run by The Key to Life Charitable Trust. This group aims to promote positive attitudinal societal change for young people around mental health throughout New Zealand.
Despite lockdowns and COVID restrictions, this young choir has stayed together and worked with their Music Director Zoë Dee and accompanist Maria Koleff to bring you a selection of songs that range from the hauntingly beautiful Spring Rain by Ēriks Ešenvalds, with its tender memories of the past, to the happy upbeat Mr. Blue Sky by Jeff Lynne of the Electric Light Orchestra, known better to our choir members as the opening music for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2!
Our senior a capella group, Mātuhi Kaiwaiata, add pace and passion with Túrót Eszik a Cigány by Zoltán Kodály, and, by way of contrast, Maria Koleff plays Rachmaninov’s Zdes’ khorosho (‘How fair is the spot’) Op.21 No 7. The entire choir sing the gentle Lullaby by Groban, Matthews and Van Der Saag, and are joined by singers from the Nelson Youth Choir Trust Board to sing a Māori blessing, Wairua Tapu.
As we move from Spring into Summer, this new choir shares with you uplifting songs of hope, peace and passion in the spacious setting of Nelson Cathedral.
