The Oshkosh Area Community Band will present Pairs, a Spring Concert, on Saturday, March 22 beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Alberta Kimball Auditorium at Oshkosh West High School.The band will present a concert of musical selections paired in some way. The band is led by Music Director David Berndt.
Music for the theater will be represented by An Overture on Themes from Porgy and Bess, music by George Gershwin, arranged by James Barnes; and Selections from Wicked, music by Stephen Schwartz as arranged by Jay Bocook.
An abridged arrangement of Maurice Ravel’s hypnotic Bolero will feature several incidental solos while The Turtle Waddle by Gus Guentzel will feature the tuba section.
Folk songs from the United Kingdom will be paired. The band will play My Bonnie Boy, the Intermezzo from Ralph Vaughan Williams English Folk Song Suite. It will be paired with Wisconsin composer Michael Story’s setting of the Irish Folk Melody Down By the Sally Gardens. Brittney Harrison will be the guest conductor.
The band will pay tribute to the recently departed Quincy Jones by playing his Soul Bossa Nova. Pie in the Face Polka from the motion picture The Great Race will be played in honor of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Henry Mancini. Ralph Nussbaumer will be on the podium for this tribute.
The Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Associate Music Director Jon Basten, will play a pair of charts penned by two members of the band. Girl of My Dreams was arranged by David Koepp, a member of the baritone saxophone section. And our music director emeritus Terry Hathaway wrote an original chart On the Slow Slide which the band will bring to life.
The concert will last about one hour and forty-five minutes including an intermission. There is never an admission charged, although we do accept donations at the door.
