REGISTRATION OPEN FOR OIL CITY COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP DAY
Oil City’s annual Community Clean-Up Day will be held on Wednesday, April 16, 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Local businesses, organizations, groups and individuals are invited to sign up for the event by April 7, and may choose their own work areas or be assigned a clean-up area upon check-in.
Oil City Community Clean-Up Day is organized by the Oil City Main Street Program’s Safe, Clean & Green Committee in conjunction with the City of Oil City, with additional support from PennDOT and Keep PA Beautiful. There are three different shifts available during the event: 9 a.m.-12:00, 12-4 p.m. and 4:00-8:00; and interested groups are advised to register in advance. Check-in will be at the Oil City Town Square, where Main Street volunteers will have a supply of trash bags, gloves and safety vests as well as bottled water and light snacks. Participants are asked to bring their own brooms, rakes, or other hand tools as desired. Tasks include hand pick-up of litter, sweeping sidewalks and raking of leaves and other debris. Participants are advised to follow safety precautions and place all bagged debris from their registered cleanup area in a designated location, and report back to the event check-in at the end of their shift. Adult supervision is required for all participants under the age of 18.
At the end of the day the Oil City Fire Department will wash down the downtown streets, and the next morning, the city’s Public Works Department will collect the bags of refuse gathered by event participants in the designated cleanup locations. Ideally, participating groups may adopt their designated area and keep it clean throughout the year.
“Clean streets and sidewalks are fundamental to a vibrant, welcoming community and we need more hands,” stated Stevette Rosen, Main Street Manager. “Participating in Community Clean-Up Day is a great way to get outside in the fresh air with friends or colleagues, roll up their sleeves and show pride in community. Keeping our downtown and surrounding areas beautiful is an ideal opportunity for people who are passionate about Oil City to lend their support. It’s a great opportunity to teach our children to care for their community, it’s a great event to earn badges for scouts or just participate as a family. ”
Although the Oil City Main Street Program’s focus is on downtown areas, participants may choose to clean another area of Oil City if desired. Priority areas for Oil City Cleanup Day include but are not limited to the following areas:
• Downtown sidewalks, landscaped areas/bump-outs, and alleys
• Prominent intersections and gateways
• City-owned parking lots
• Public parks, green spaces and playgrounds
• Areas along waterways
We are hopeful that Oil City’s Cleanup Day inspires business and property owners to clean their own windows, awnings, storefronts and private parking areas, noted Rosen. “A clean and well-kept storefront reflects your business and is essential to the success of the surrounding business district. In a small community like ours, people take note of those who take pride in their property. Clean windows are like welcoming signs to your customers.”
Main Street and Mayor Kluck are starting a new initiative. It’s the MOCHA—Make Oil City Hip Again. Starting this March, Mayor Kluck will give our framed certificates to Businesses deserving of the MOCHA award! Your businesses if not caught by one of us in action doing the MOCHA, can email up a photo of you and your staff in action. Maybe with a before and after picture to [email protected] or [email protected].
Groups interested in participating in Oil City Cleanup Day are asked to register by April 7, 2025. Registration forms are available online at https://www.oilcity.org/all-events/community-cleanup-day as well as in the main lobby of Oil City Hall, at the Oil City Library, or by request at 814-677-3152 or [email protected].
