Join refuge staff and partners on a FREE bird identification walk through the floodplain forest! We often see many birds close by and our pace will be more of a “crawl”! Please leave pets at home. We'll have some binoculars for folks to borrow on a first-come, first-served basis.
Where: 8441 Lytle Road, Onalaska, WI 54650. We'll meet at the Brice Prairie Conservation Association Clubhouse. Please park only on the gravel in a way that leaves maximum space for other visitors.
When: Wed. April 9, 8:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.
NOTE: This walk will likely take place BEFORE the peak of the spring songbird migration. We may not see some of the rarer birds that only briefly stop over here, but it should be a good opportunity to see some of the early spring arrivals before the tree leaves are fully grown. It's a lot easier to see birds in the trees when the leaves are small.
Walks take place rain or shine but may be cancelled for high probability of thunderstorms or heavy rain. We’ll walk about 1 mile along the Great River State Trail on mostly flat gravel/wooden boardwalk.
The Great River State Trail is owned by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WI DNR), who are celebrating the 125th Anniversary of the Wisconsin State Park System in 2025! We are thankful for their partnership and for maintaining this beautiful trail!
Thank you too, to our additional co-hosts and conservation partners: Audubon Upper Mississippi River, Brice Prairie Conservation Association, Friends of the Refuge – Mississippi River Pools 7 and 8, and Refuge volunteers!
