My first legal internship was with a celebrated local art lawyer in San Francisco. I became an entertainment and copyright lawyer. I love working with artists and creators and am one of the few estate planning attorneys who understand intellectual property rights and the right of publicity.
Some clients tell me that they would be thrilled if their heirs monetized their artwork by allowing Pottery Barn to sell shower curtains with copies of their artwork. Other clients tell me that they would roll over in their graves if this were to happen.
Estate planning addresses exactly this issue and a failure to plan leads to consequences like the terrible doormats I keep seeing on Facebook with Jean-Michel Basquiat's artwork.
