About this Event

SPOTTISWOODE & HIS ENEMIES perform their first DC Holiday spectacular in many years and possibly their first ever at the deej, the coolest and vibiest house party any side of the Potomac! The band promises a manic seasonal concoction brimming with love, joyful singalongs and surprising detours; a rock odyssey of shock and awe; a wild goose chase expedition down the chimney and back again! Expect laughter, wonder and the occasional bittersweet tear.

Referred to as a “genius” and a “downtown ringleader” by The New Yorker, Spottiswoode is the son of an American opera singer and an English clergyman. WNYC’s legendary DJ John Schaefer describes him as "one of New York’s more colorful band leaders for more than a decade.”

Spottiswoode’s music travels the gamut, drawing comparisons to Leonard Cohen, Ray Davies, Nick Cave, Tom Waits, Randy Newman and Jim Morrison. Still, he’s very much his own man. He “evokes real emotions, sometimes different ones in a single song” (Dan Reed, WXPN).

For the past two decades, the Anglo-American has been the frontman of Spottiswoode & His Enemies, a septet that has become a New York institution. The band features Spottiswoode (vocals, guitar), John Young (bass), Tim Vaill (drums), Candace DeBartolo (saxophone), Kevin Cordt (trumpet), Riley McMahon (guitar, mandolin, melodica, glockenspiel), Tony Lauria (keyboards, accordion).

The band has released seven acclaimed records, performed numerous Manhattan residencies, and toured extensively from SXSW and Lille Europe to Lincoln Center. They've been nominated for numerous Independent Music Awards winning Best Adult Contemporary Song for the piano ballad, Chariot.

The band’s gothic rock opera, ABOVE HELL’S KITCHEN, played to sold-out crowds at the New York Musical Theatre Festival. Spottiswoode has since written a revised version set in London - Between The Angel And The Old Kent Road - as well as screenplay incarnations of both the New York and London stories.

By a very strange twist of fate, Spottiswoode’s dream of getting a feature script made recently turned into reality. His namesake, Roger Spottiswoode (Tomorrow Never Dies, Under Fire, Turner & Hooch) read two of his screenplays. Roger, who is no direct relation, liked them both. He decided to option Either Side Of Midnight, a lyrical tale of four colliding stories set in New York City over one Friday night. The film was shot in New York at the very end of 2019 and edited during lockdown.

“Genius” John Donohue (New Yorker Magazine)

“Nothing short of transportive” Steve LaBate (Paste Magazine)

"He doesn’t simply sing his songs, he inhabits them. Whether it’s a mesmerizing and hushed lullaby about the pouring rain, a randy cabaret waltz with winking rhymes, or a galloping noir rocker that builds to a psychotic climax, Spottiswoode draws you in. The dapper (and sometimes playfully unhinged) singer/guitarist is both down-to-earth and as intense as Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen, with a little wild Joe Cocker soul in there, too.” Ken Maiuri (Northampton Gazette)
