This Spoon Carving Workshop will be held at the Northey Street Organic Farmers Markets, (garden area near the chicken coop), in Windsor, on Sunday 27 October , 2024.
This is a hands-on workshop where you will be guided through the process of carving a spoon. This workshop is suitable for anyone interested in wood carving, no previous experience is required.
There will be a discussion on the characteristics of different types of wood, the hand tools that are traditionally used, and techniques on how to use them. Most of the day will be spent hands on carving, and you will get to create a spoon from scratch. All tools and materials will be provided, and you will get to try a number of different hand carving tools.

Where: Northey Street Organic Farmers Market, 54 Northey Street, Windsor.
The carving space will be set up on the grassy area next to the Nursery side entrance and my market stall, (also next to the chicken coop), marked F02 on the map. We will be able to sit undercover if it rains.
Cost: $73.98, plus a booking fee of $6.02
A further session is available for $45 for those who would like to come back to carve more spoons after the initial workshop.

Hello
My name is Silja Leskinen. I'm a hand maker, bush crafter, wood carver, a hopeless dog lover, and someone who would like to convert the world to a slower pace, and operate with less consumption and waste.
My ancestors hail from Finland where I was born and grew up. I've been calling Acacia Ridge on the southern edge of Brisbane my home since 2001.
I have been making things with found, collected, and salvaged materials since 2019 after leaving behind a long term office job.
I have a small stall at the Northey Street Organic Markets for my creations: wooden spoons, gum nut and feather earrings, creations made with found clay, wall hangings and other odd things.
I was introduced to wood carving through wilderness survival training and made my first spoon with a sturdy bushcraft knife, pruning saw, and with the aid of fire. I love the simplicity of that way, being able to take one or two tools with me and sit and carve in a forest or park. However, in the last few years I have also been seeking the company of many other fine carving tools.
Wood carving can be about many things: mastering the technique and producing the finest forms and shapes, or learning to work with the many different tools. For me it's about those things too, but my heart strings are pulled by old animist ways, trying to remember what it would mean to relate to a living thing, (be it the wood, the tools, or what emerges from the carving), feeling the connection, praising the beauty, learning about the nature of the other, and wondering about what stories this one holds in its being...
Carving, like all hand making, is also a bit of an antidote to consumerism because you realise how much time goes into making a simple thing...
