Metal bending parties became popular in the 1970s after “mystifier” Uri Geller began twisting silverware on television. Part I will be a short history of 20th-century mind-over-matter experiments with metal objects and the magicians, physicists, and Spiritualists who conducted them. Part II is a workshop intended to be fun – a party! Inspired by the spoon bending events once held in Lily Dale by Historian Ron Nagy, we will attempt to get out of our heads and out of our phones and “Bend!” Ron says: “Spoon bending is a great way to demonstrate what can be accomplished when you are able to defocus your mind and let go of all the negative thought patterns that have blocked the higher energies that empower us. It shows us the mind and body can react together and cause harmonious health conditions. It may seem remarkable to you that with very little training one might be able to accomplish this extraordinary proof that spirit and mind-over-matter is more powerful than certain realities.” The bending will be accomplished by holding utensils with our hands and applying slight pressure when the metal feels soft. Participants are encouraged to bring silver, plated, or stainless forks and spoons – the more, the better. Ron Nagy, Lily Dale Historian, may make a guest appearance.
Shannon Taggart began photographing in Lily Dale in 2001. Her work on Spiritualism has been exhibited internationally and featured by CNN, New York Times T Style Magazine, BBC, London Financial Times, and the Paris Review, among others. Her book, Séance, was named one of TIME Magazine’s “Best Photobooks of 2019.” She is currently working on an illustrated book about The Society for Research on Rapport and Telekinesis (SORRAT), one of the strangest cases in the history of parapsychology.
