About the Book:

When eighteen-year-old Celestine leaves her home in Guyana to attend college in the United States, she's filled with a mix of excitement and trepidation. She's always been a high achiever, but navigating a new country and culture is daunting, especially when she's leaving behind everything she's ever known.
As Celestine settles into her new life in a small college town in the Midwest, she finds herself struggling to fit in. She misses the warmth and familiarity of her family and friends back home, and the prejudice and ignorance she encounters from some of her classmates only makes things worse.
But Celestine is determined to succeed. With the help of her new sisters and found family, she begins to find her footing. As she explores her new surroundings and discovers her own identity, Celestine learns that she's stronger and more resilient than she ever imagined.
Told with honesty and heart, “Departure Story” is a moving story of one young woman's quest for education, independence, and belonging.
