We are overjoyed to announce that Debra Magpie Earling’s novel PERMA RED is the 2024 Spokane Is Reading selection! We’ll host Earling at two separate events on October 24th, the first at 1PM at the Spokane Valley Library and the second at 7 PM at the Central Library. Both events will be free and open to the public.PERMA RED has been highlighted as one of the Great American Reads in a recent edition of The Atlantic Monthly. It’s won numerous awards including The Western Writers Association Spur Award for Best Novel of the West, the Mountain and Plains Bookseller Association Award, WWA’s Medicine Pipe Bearer Award for Best First Novel, a WILLA Literary Award, and the American Book Award. Set on the Flathead Reservation in Eastern Montana and centering the experiences of Louise White Elk, a Salish woman, the novel discusses tribal identity, survival, and the deleterious impact of colonialism. It is a quintessential read for the greater Northwest and beyond.
Earling is Bitterroot Salish, lives in Missoula, and was born here in Spokane. An NEA and Guggenheim recipient and a recent winner of a PNBA, Earling was named professor emeritus in 2021 by the University of Montana, where she was the first Native American director of their famed writing program.
