Spirit of Japan — A Musical Journey Through Culture, Story, and Sound
Step into the evocative world of Japanese art and music with Salem Symphonic Winds' season-opening concert, Spirit of Japan. Held in the acoustically superb Rose Auditorium, this general admission event offers excellent sight lines from every seat. Arrive early to choose your favorite spot — seating is first-come, first-served.
The program features three strikingly different works that celebrate Japan’s spirit through vivid storytelling and emotional depth:
🎴 Julie Giroux’s Symphony No. 4 – Bookmarks from Japan
Inspired by 19th-century woodblock print bookmarks, each movement paints a musical impression of a traditional Japanese scene. From the majestic Mount Fuji to the bustling Nihonbashi Bridge, Giroux blends cinematic flair with folk elements — culminating in a thrilling finale that races along the historic Tokaido Highway.
🕊️ Akito Matsuda’s Liz and the Blue Bird
Drawn from the beloved anime Sound! Euphonium, this four-movement suite explores themes of friendship, longing, and transformation. With delicate textures and emotional nuance, it’s a moving experience for anime fans and newcomers alike.
⛪ Yasuhide Ito’s Gloriosa
Inspired by Shusaku Endo’s novel Silence, this dramatic work reflects the hidden faith of early Japanese Christians during a time of persecution. Rich in texture and cultural fusion, Gloriosa offers a powerful conclusion to the concert — a testament to resilience and spiritual devotion.
Whether you're a lover of classical music, Japanese culture, or simply seeking a unique artistic experience, Spirit of Japan promises an unforgettable afternoon of sound and story.
