An event in collaboration with University of Worcester as part of the Being Human Festival 2025.
Learn about oral history and how we can use this to preserve family stories, and collectively create a sample from recycled fabric.
In this three hour workshop on collecting and preserving family histories, especially stories of motherhood, we will discuss how these histories are often preserved through heirlooms, possessions and valued belongings, often material goods (such as a baby blanket). Stories connected to these objects are often not written down but are passed on through conversations.
The workshop will start with an introduction to oral histories, and then the group will practice some oral history techniques using the objects they have brought with them as a ‘conversation starter’.
The group will also collectively make a quilt, using a technique called foundation piecing: stitching together scraps of material, using an easy-to-learn hand-stitched running stitch (there will be plenty of assistance if you’ve not done this before). Material will be provided, but you’re welcome to bring any scraps of your own to include (this is optional).
The objects, oral histories and quilt will form a ‘museum for a day’.
Anyone with an interest in crafting and/or oral history is welcome!

This workshop is part of the Marginalised Motherhoods series.
The workshop will take place in the Tudor Room where there is only stair access.
