The Beaumont Heritage Society, in collaboration with Jefferson County and the Jefferson County Historical Commission, will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, January 10th, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. to unveil new interpretive panels and commemorate the 125th anniversary of the Spindletop oil boom — the historic event that transformed Beaumont, Texas, and reshaped the global energy industry. On January 10, 1901, the Spindletop gusher erupted, launching the modern petroleum era and turning Beaumont into a booming hub of innovation, opportunity, and global significance. The newly installed interpretive panels tell the story of that remarkable transformation, highlighting the people, technologies, and lasting impacts that emerged from Spindletop.
In Giant Under the Hill: A History of the Spindletop Oil Discovery, co -author Judith Linsley wrote, “The Lucas Gusher changed the course of history, inaugurating a new fuel age. This site will preserve this important story for future generations.” Linsley will be present to remark on the 125th anniversary.
The ceremony will take place at Spindletop Park, where community leaders, local officials, historians, and residents will gather to celebrate one of the most pivotal moments in American industrial history.
