Rules/Details: 📜
Up to 10 (12...we're considering) poets will present their original work for the audience.
There will be 5 judges selected from the audience who will score each poem from 0.0 to 10.0 using decimals to minimize ties.
There will be 3 rounds! ALL ROUNDS ARE CLEAN SLATE‼️This means scores for each round only matter to that round!!
Poets, come ready with 3 poems of your original work! You must perform your own poems.
Poets will have 3:00 minutes with a 10 second grace period to perform their poems. In a normal poetry slam, .5 is deducted for every 10 seconds a poet goes over the 3 minute and 10 second time limit. However, Spellbound was created by an English major who has a grudge against extra math, so once a poet goes beyond the time limit, that poet will be disqualified from moving on within the poetry slam.
The cuts for each round will ultimately be determined by the number of poets who sign up to compete. If a tie happens for 1st place, there will be a final head to head round. The judges will select between Poet A and Poet B with the majority vote winning. Be ready! This COULD be a 1 minute lightning round!
Time starts when the poet engages the audience. (Tip/trick - Save on time - don't give disclaimers before you begin your poem.)
No props, costumes, or anything are allowed to accompany the poet's work.
We follow ADA guidlines when it comes to accessibility and the possible usage of certain devices and or items that are designed to help make the stage, performances, and poems more accessible.
The top 2 poets of the night will earn their spots in our Grandslam in December that will determine who makes it onto Spellbound's 2026 competing team! 🏆
