Ehud Olmert served as Prime Minister of the State of Israel from 2006 to 2009.
Before becoming Prime Minister in 2006, Olmert served in a variety of cabinet positions, as Deputy Prime Minister, and as Mayor of Jerusalemn.
His time as Prime Minister was marked by the Second Lebanon War, Operation Cast Lead, and diploimatic initiatives with the PLO. During the talks, Olmert agreed that Israel would share Jerusalem as the joint capital of Israel and a Palestinian state and hand over its holy sites to a multinational committee, land swaps that would allow Israel to keep its major settlement blocs in the West Bank, the construction of a tunnel connecting the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, and a demilitarized Palestinian state with an American-led international security force stationed on the Palestinian–Jordanian border. While a deal was not struck, his time in office saw Israel and Palestine come as close as ever to reaching peace.
He has been a staunch critic of current Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and was a leading critic of the current government's proposed judicial reforms.
Given his vast political and diplomatic experience, Mr. Olmert will offer thoughts on the way out of the current conflict and possible solutions to the Israel-Palestine conflict more broadly.
Mr. Olmert will give prepared remarks before taking questions from the audience.
