This course is designed for parents and carers of children aged 8 and over who live in West Northamptonshire.
The workshop will be held over 6 sessions at 6:00pm - 8:00pm on the following dates:
- Wednesday 17th April 2024
- Wednesday 24th April 2024
- Wednesday 1st May 2024
- Wednesday 8th May 2024
- Wednesday 15th May 2024
- Wednesday 22nd May 2024

• this will be refundable if you attend the workshop (or cancel your place within 24 hours of the start date). Please note we will be unable to refund non attendees who haven't previously cancelled a place within this timeframe.
We are offering two adult places per child. However we do ask that the same people attend all of the sessions, if possible.
The topics covered are shown below.
- Introduction to Autism: What is an Autism Spectrum Disorder and what are the associated difficulties
- Communication and Introducing Visual Supports - Looking at areas of communication: Understanding of language, Expressive language
- Joint Attention and Social Interaction - Attention and social understanding and how that impacts on social interactions
- A representative from Northamptonshire's Information, Advice and Support Service will be discussing Special Educational Needs support in education. We will speak about the relevant legislation to child with autism in education, help you to understand your rights and discuss relevant support strategies that can be used in school, based on the strategies learnt in the last 3 weeks.
- Understanding Behaviour - To help you understand your child’s behaviour and introduce some practical strategies to effectively support behaviour and building on the most suitable practical strategies to effectively support behaviour.
- Emotional Literacy and Consolidation – Understanding how to help children and young people with Autism learn what emotions are, how they feel and what they can do when they feel them as well as consolidating everything learnt so far.
Please note: This workshop is written and hosted by SEND Support Service in West Northamptonshire. If you don’t live within this Local Authority you may find that some of the discussion around diagnosis pathways, SEND Support Service offers and referrals to external professionals is not relevant to you. If you require specific information related to your situation within your Local Authority you are recommended to contact them separately. Rest assured the advice and strategies shared are relevant regardless of where you live.
