Zada Mae was the primary artist for Emerald Bay Trading Company at the Nationally known Ran Barrel Artisans' Village in the Florida Keys and well known in international basket weaving circles. Originally from Charleston, S.C., Zada Mae, has been a basket weaver for more than 40 years.Pine needle basketry and the tradition of coiling grasses, reeds and pine needles has existed for centuries. Slaves from Africa brought many of the techniques used today. The seminole, Cherokee, Choctaw and Cushatta American Indian Tribes are all known for crafting baskets and other items from pine needles.
