About this Event
Our Program
Minimum Requirement: Must have attended at least one in-person basic (Year 1) ASM Materials Camp-Teachers.
The Materials Genome Initiative is to accelerate the design of new materials by incorporating fundamental materials property databases and computational tools into the traditional engineering design process.
Who Should Attend?
High School Teachers: Science (especially Chemistry and Physical Science), Engineering, and Industrial/Career and Technical Education
Middle School Teachers: Physical Science
Pre-Service Science Teachers
Art, Math, and Community College Teachers as space allows
Why Attend?
Learn about Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME), a rapidly growing area of the materials science and engineering field
Learn to use free online tools for computational materials design: THERMO-CALC
Practice K-12 appropriate proof-of-concept experiments and materials design challenges
Prototype high-school friendly lab FRANKENSTEEL, a self-healing composite .. design an alloy, make it, break it and watch it self-heal.
Typical Schedule
Monday-Thursday | 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
Friday | 8 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Center for Hierarchical Materials Design (CHiMaD)
The Materials Genome Specialty Camp is taught by professional researchers from CHiMaD and in partnership with ASM Materials Education Foundation. CHiMaD is a NIST-sponsored center of excellence for advanced materials research focusing on developing the next generation of computational tools, databases and experimental techniques in order to enable the accelerated design of novel materials and their integration to industry, one of the primary goals of the U.S. Government’s Materials Genome Initiative (MGI).
CHiMaD is a Chicago-based consortium of Northwestern University (NU), University of Chicago (UC), Argonne National Laboratory (ANL), and small-business QuesTek Innovations, along with ASM Materials Education Foundation, a professional society.
