About this Event
The School of Communication and Journalism and the Department of Psychological Sciences at Auburn University invite journalists to our 2024 Journalism Mental Health Workshop on Monday, October 21 from 8:00am to 2:00pm. This event is generously supported by the Alabama Press Association Journalism Foundation.
All sessions will take place at the Biggio Center on Auburn University’s main campus, with complimentary breakfast, lunch, and snacks provided. Space is limited, so please register today to secure your spot.
Schedule:
- 8:00 a.m. – Sign-in and breakfast, Biggio Workshop Room
- 08:45 a.m. – Welcome, introductions, and a group discussion on the well-being of journalists and the factors influencing mental health in the industry.
- 09:30 a.m. – Session on journalist mental well-being, presented by Dr. Emma Lathan-Powell, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychological Sciences, Auburn University (Biggio Workshop Room).
- 10:45 a.m.– Break
- 11:00 a.m. – Session on digital presence and online safety for journalists, presented by Dr. Fawad Shah, Assistant Professor, School of Communication and Journalism (Biggio Workshop Room)
- 12:15 p.m. – Debrief and conclusion of the session
- 12:45 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. – Lunch
In addition to the workshop, you will have the opportunity to participate in research led by scholars from Auburn University. This research is intended to better understand critical issues that threaten journalists’ well-being, including trauma exposure, moral injury, and burnout.
