Join the Zapotec textile artist and natural dyer for a special workshop and demonstration, learn about the rich history of cochineal, and create your own colored scarf. $180 for members; $200 general admission; limited spaces available. This workshop is open to all levels of knowledge. All tools, supplies, and materials are included with payment. Participation for the entire duration of the workshop is required.
Porfirio Gutiérrez is a California-based Zapotec textile artist and natural dyer, born in 1978 and raised in the historic Zapotec textile community of Teotitlán del Valle in Oaxaca, Mexico. Porifirio grew up immersed in color, surrounded by the wildness of Oaxaca’s mountains, and steeped in the knowledge of plants used for healing and coloring. He has devoted his life’s work to revitalizing and preserving traditional Zapotec natural dye techniques and reinterpreting traditional textiles and materials.
